Happy Valentine's Day! And welcome to the latest issue of the Developer Shed newsletter. Think of this as our valentine to you. Okay, so it may not be the most romantic thing in the world, but it's full of information that you can use to help you get more work done and make your job easier. Try getting that out of a box of chocolates!
Let me direct your attention first to the latest article we're highlighting from
eWeek. If you're a reseller, you'll want to check it out; it's a slide show of the 12 executives who've done the most for the channel this past year. It starts with Michael Dell and his 180 degree turnaround to let Dell computers be sold in the channel rather than directly through the company, as had been done up until now. Check out the piece and find out who the other 11 executives are and what they did to deserve the honor.
And don't forget to check out the great selection of articles we have for you this week. Dev Shed readers will enjoy our continuing series on Python. We also wrap up our series on destructors and talk about more ways to use Yahoo Web Services with PHP. Meanwhile, readers of ASP Free continued their C education, gained an understanding of objects and learned how to convert images losslessly in C#.
The web designers eagerly reading Dev Articles were not disappointed this week. We continued our series on JavaScript Objects and got into Entities in our beginning HTML series. We also wrapped up our three-part series on building corner effects with transparent background images. Meanwhile, hardware enthusiasts enjoyed the reviews we ran about an Epson multimedia device and a computer case that's cool in more ways than one. They also learned how to get the most out of their audio gadget storage.
The professionals over at SEO Chat got heavy doses of both Google and Yahoo this week. For the former, we talked about Google's charity initiatives; for the latter, we covered the latest news of Microsoft's proposal to purchase Yahoo. Yahoo rejected it, and we took a look at where things might go from here. We rounded out the week with an article on how to optimize your press releases for search engines. Finally, for you do-it-yourselfers, we've highlighted a number of interesting tutorials on Tutorialized. Learn how to make dark bronze skin tones in Photoshop (instant tan!), create water reflections, install Apache Web Server on Windows Vista, and more!
As always, thanks for reading. Until next week,

Weird and Cool
Latest Hacker Sport: Speedcabling
Read
more about this
You would think that everyone hates the rat's nest formed by all those wires behind your typical computer. Not Steven Schkolne. This IT professional took drudgery of untangling that mass of wires and turned it into a sport of sorts - speedcabling.
Schkolne set up the first competition in an art gallery in Los Angeles. Competitors needed to untangle six Ethernet cables of various lengths in the fastest time. Schkolne prepared the tangled wires by first putting them together in a figure eight, and then running them through a clothes dryer for three minutes. "After that, they're pretty much how they appear in nature," he noted.
The sport has its fine points. After you separate the wire, you have to hold the full cable above your head to show that it's untangled. After the cables are separated, they are tested to make sure they can still carry a network signal after being untangled - if they can't carry a signal, the competitor is disqualified. The winner of the first contest, Matthew Howell, received a $50 gift certificate for a local Italian restaurant. He credits his victory to techniques he learned while kneading pizza dough.
New Coral Reef Found Thanks to Google Earth
Read more about this
Normally you'd expect great ocean discoveries to be made from a ship. But Dr. Chris Simpson made his from his desktop computer with the help of Google Earth. And thanks to his sharp eyes, we now know about a set of coral reefs off the coast of western Australia that no one has ever seen before.
To add icing to the cake, this particular type of coral reef is rare. "I felt like bloody Charles Darwin up here discovering these new reefs!" Dr. Simpson enthused. The coral reef specialist at West Australia's Department of Environment and Conservation explained that fringing coral reefs, the type he discovered, can only form off the coast of an arid location, where no rivers flow out into the water.
The particular location in which he found the coral reef is very hard to reach and features turbid waters, massive tides, and crocodiles - just the things to discourage even the hardiest explorers. This is where using Google Earth came in handy; Dr. Simpson could examine the area without the risk of getting caught by the tide and/or being eaten. Almost as if in anticipation of the discovery, the previous week Australia's federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett announced an agreement to make an environmental assessment of the entire region in which Dr. Simpson found the reef.
Happy Birthday Charles Darwin
Read more about this
Charles Darwin was born 199 years ago this week, and by happy coincidence, his famous theory of evolution was first published in his book On the Origin of the Species 149 years ago this week. A number of festivities are planned next year for the 200th and 150th anniversaries respectively. But the British Research Council is starting things off a little early.
Next month, it will launch a web site that addresses Darwin's legacy to science. It will focus on a different academic field each month, and discuss how that field has been inspired by evolutionary theory. "We want to focus on modern research and how it draws on Darwin's theory," notes Pat Middleton of the UK's Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
Many sectors of society do not believe in Darwin's theory of evolution. Others blame things like social Darwinism for society's woes. But it cannot be denied that Darwin's theory of evolution is backed by a substantial body of evidence, and is responsible for many advances in our understanding of biology and our place in nature, to name just a couple of important areas. And the idea of evolution has come into common usage in areas far from the biological sciences, such as in chip design (i.e. Moore's Law).
