The Soap Box IBM DeveloperworksFREE IT Downloads!

Welcome to the latest edition of the Developer Shed newsletter. Here in South Florida, we had a cold front come through recently that hung around for several days, putting us in sympathy with the rest of the country. (Okay, it only got down to the high 30s on the Fahrenheit scale at night, but some of us take out the parkas when it dips below 60). We're happy to be sitting indoors at our nice warm computers in front of our monitors' cheery glow, publishing the information you need to help you get your job done. (Excuse me while I look up some crackling fireplace wallpaper for my PC…).

We'll start you off with an article we're highlighting from eWeek. It talks about the challenges of change, in particular how scaling up can put stress on your company. It's an excerpt from a book titled "The Power of Unreasonable People: How Social Entrepreneurs Create Markets that Change the World."

Whether or not you're in a hurry to change the world, you'll want to check out the excellent assortment of articles we have for you this week. We have fewer than usual due to our observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but we make up for the lack of quantity in terms of quality. Dev Shed readers pondered Sun's purchase of MySQL, and learned more about destructors in PHP 5. On ASP Free, meanwhile, we published articles on the usefulness of conditional statements in VBScript, and continued our series on building an online shopping website.

Web designers reading Dev Articles benefited from our coverage of JavaScript Objects, focusing on strings, and the third part of a series on beginning HTML. Dev Hardware readers enjoyed reviews of three great products: a travel printer from HP, a video card from nVidia, and a laptop from Dell.

The SEO professionals reading SEO Chat learned how Wal-Mart's entry into SEO and SEM could actually benefit them. They also read about common SEO mistakes to avoid. Finally, the tutorials we're highlighting from Tutorialized this week feature interesting effects you can create for text and photos. Enjoy!

As always, thanks for reading. Until next week,
Developer Shed Staff

Yes, We Do Need IR Badges…
Read more about this

Some companies track where their employees are and what they're doing by various means. Sometimes that's necessary for security purposes. Such technology can also be used for research purposes, however, with interesting results, as MIT found out when they used special badges developed by their Human Dynamics Lab in a meeting with their corporate sponsors.

The badges recognize each other using infrared, and also record badge wearers' speech, distance from other badges, and movements. Ben Waber blogged about handing out the badges to 70 participants at an event the Media Lab held for their corporate sponsors in Tokyo. During the all-day event, a database collected the interaction data from the badges, and a visualization program pulled the data from the database and projected it onto a handy blank wall in near-real time.

In short, the badges captured social networks as they developed. Many participants found themselves checking the projection regularly; some even seemed to be competing to become the center of the network by meeting as many people as possible. Waber noted that "We are going to analyze the data collected with the Sociometric badges to see if we can predict company affiliation, recognize research affiliates, and so on." The researchers may add additional information into future visualizations to give participants "an even better understanding of what's happening in their environment, as well as how they can interact with it."

E-Paper Phone to Hit Market
Read more about this

Many of us would love a larger screen with our phone. Unfortunately, that would lead to a larger phone unless one could make the screen fold up. Polymer Vision has the answer, in the form of a foldable, roll-out five-inch screen. This screen is featured on its Readius e-reader, which is scheduled to arrive in stores later this year.

The Readius could rival Amazon's Kindle. The 16 levels of grey it handles make it a good choice for displaying text from e-books, RSS feeds, and other sources. You'll have plenty of time to relax with that novel, too, as Polymer Vision claims that users will get 30 hours of continuous reading time out of the device. It lacks an external display, but it does support POP3 and IMAP email.

Other important features aren't neglected either. If you tire of reading, you can use the device as an audio player. You can store information for the Readius on Micro SD cards of up to 8 GB in size. As for data transmission and reception, the Readius boasts a USB 2.0 port and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity. Unfortunately, Polymer Vision has yet to reveal two of the most important things about the Readius: which countries will get it first, and how much it will cost.

More Reliable Than the Millennium Falcon?

Richard Branson, head of Virgin Galactic, unveiled a model of SpaceShipTwo, a commercial spacecraft that will take paying passengers into space for suborbital flights. While several companies are attempting to develop space tourism, Branson's goal is to have his company be the first one to get tourists into space on a regular basis. Regularly-scheduled flights could start as early as next year.

Nothing will happen without testing, of course, and the spaceship is expected to begin test flights later this year. No doubt the 150 passengers already signed up can hardly wait. Virgin Galactic is holding $30 million in deposits for the rides, which cost about $200,000 per person. The passenger list includes physicist Stephen Hawking.

The flights will take off from a launch pad currently planned for New Mexico, last for up to two and a half hours, and feature five minutes of weightlessness. Virgin Galactic's suborbital flights form the "low end" in time and cost for space tourism - the spacecraft technically reaches space but comes back to Earth without completing a full revolution of the planet. Others competing in the commercial space race include Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin; PayPal founder Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies Corp; and hotelier Robert Bigelow. The leader is Space Adventures, which has sent a total of five paying customers to the International Space Station.
