The Soap Box
Hey, everybody. If you're looking for a funny story, check out the news off to the right. Apparently eBay is clueless enough that they had been telling people that a phisher site is their own. To top it off, they can't even shut the offending site. Of course, we have published lots of great articles this week too.
There are some great articles up on Dev Articles. Be sure to read Alejandro Gervasio's tutorial on using drag and droppable DIVs, which can replace pop-ups. On SEO Chat, Jennifer Sullivan Cassidy starts a really informative series about search engine algorithms. There's a lot of info coming up for her readers, so be sure to see what she starts out with.
On Dev Hardware this week, Remco disassembles his hard drive and mods it. See his pics and read about him going a few steps beyond case modding.
If Bill Gates getting involved in researching prostitutes seems intriguing, and if the latest round of wikipedia bashing gets you excited, take a look below. Our weekly Weird and Cool features three news stories that are, well, either weird or cool.
Until next week, Dev Shed Staff

Weird and Cool
Wikipedia
Bashing Continues
Wikipedia is changing its rules after a bit of controversy. An entry gained public attention when somebody discovered it was attacking the John Seigenthaler. It claimed he was possibly responsible for Robert Kennedy's assassination: "For a brief time, he was thought to have been directly involved in the Kennedy assassinations of both John, and his brother, Bobby. Nothing was ever proven." The entry was made by an anonymous poster. In a few days, wikipedia will not allow anonymous users to start new articles. They will still be able to edit existing ones, but wikipedia owners hope this adds some accountability to the website.
Bill
Gates Gives Money to Researching Prostitutes
Bill Gates offered $450 million to the Grand Challenges in Global Health, joked with the crowd: “We could have sorghum that cures latent tuberculosis. We could have mosquitoes that spread vitamin A. And most important, we could have bananas that never need to be kept cold.”
In reality, the money he was giving to the proposals was drafted at $200 million. But because researching cancer and heart disease wasn’t that interesting (but a necessary charity), he increased his donations. Now the money can be spread out to all kinds of research. Among the approved projects is a researcher who tests prostitutes in Kenya for venereal diseases. Because some of the prostitutes have built up immunities to HIV, researchers want to investigate prostitutes further in order to find a cure. Another approved piece of research will try to make cassavas, which provide food for millions in Africa, less toxic and more enduring after being picked.
Sony
Advertises with Vandalism
Hoping to promote the PSP, Sony has begun a graffiti campaign in major cities. The different graffiti ads display images of teens locked in a blank stare while playing video games. They don't have any brand marks to identify the handheld, but the images are pretty obvious. Their target audience, who enjoys street art, are already discrediting them. Vandals have altered the graffiti, one adding the word "Fony" to mock the company, another writing "Get out of my city." Sony says it has been paying businesses to paint their walls, reportedly only $100 for a couple weeks.
