Unfortunately, my week hasn’t started off too well. I’m in the middle of a hard drive crisis (read: crash) as I sit here writing this. One of my hard drives went down this weekend, and unfortunately, it’s the one with all my photos on it. I know, I know, B-A-C-K-U-P! I’ve certainly learned my lesson. The funny thing is that the drive that failed was my backup drive. I guess you can never have too many backups. I’ll be spending most of my time trying to recover whatever I can--hopefully at a cost that’s affordable. I received numerous emails this week about the notorious PDF problem that has been plaguing readers running Adobe Reader (aka Acrobat) v5. If I haven’t responded to you, my apologies; but I’m happy to say that we’ve solved the problem with the PDF and now users of both Acrobat 5.x and those in the GNU world using xpdf can now see Plug In in all its glory! Finally, I'd like to congratulate Heather (AKA ASPNewbie) on the new addition to her family! She delivered a healthy baby girl last week! Congratulations, Heather! Frank Manno Lead Editor Developer Shed, Inc. frank@developershed.com (P.S. For those of you asking about my (Gnorb's) wedding pics, I just got them Sunday and am putting them up for display. As soon as I get them up I'll let you guys know. For now, here's a collage put together by one of the photo-graphers, David Driggers. The guy does awesome work, especially with photo-journalism, so if you need a photo-grapher and are in Florida, give him a call, and tell him I sent you. - Norbert 'Gnorb' Cartagena) Collage: http://www.daviddriggers.homestead.com/NORBERTANDCYNTHIAFULL.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-A D V E R T I S E M E N T-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= M-Business Anywhere FREE Developer Edition Provide off-line mobile access to Web-based applications using your existing Web development skills. http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;7368435;8872785;g?http://www.ianywhere.com/promos/downloads/mbusiness/mbusiness_download_dsb.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Dev Shed =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------- This Week's Features -------------------- Introduction to JavaServer Faces, Part 3 ---------------------------------------- by McGraw-Hill/Osborne 2004-03-22 In this chapter, Budi teaches us how to write an online survey application to get a feel for how this great technology works. This chapter prepares you for the next chapters by introducing the JSF Application Programming Interface (API) and the Application Configuration file. Why must we bother the server again to retrieve the same results that are now held in the browser? This article will show you the quickest way to order your database results. What do these variables do? This article will answer this question and more. It’s well known that one of the best ways to keep visitors coming back is interactivity. So why not let your visitors battle it out between each other? As a software developer, I wanted to discover this information algorithmically. My idea was to use my own string similarity algorithm to compare each word from a list of Tolkien words to words from 14 other real languages. For each Tolkien word, I would find and record the language with the word that is (lexically) most similar. To all appearances, this is not intended to be a fly-by-night operation. The goal of the operation is to help stem the spread of unsolicited bulk email. You want your site to be a flashing light to Google and Yahoo. Having lots of images and levels in your site might make for an interesting site, but if your site cannot be easily spidered, your site may be invisible to search engines. At a MM road show last month I saw the real power of DIVs if used in conjunction with CSS2. I couldn't believe my own eyes! Sadly I could not find detailed how-to's or tutorials on this topic across the net. I need something very deep and stout. Any help would be great. Thanks a lot! - Paolo Pustorino Hi Paolo, It can be a very daunting, and at times discouraging, task when trying to re-learn the Web development process using a table-less "mindset". Fortunately, there are some great tutorials available that will aid you in bridging the gap. There are also books available for you to purchase that can teach you everything about Web Standards ("Designing With Web Standards" by Jeffrey Zeldman). The answers provided by you and your readers have been very useful in my learning process. It really is strange how much people in The Netherlands (my place of origin) knew of my problem. I've received a lot of response on this question, just because it was in your newsletter. Thanks a million, I mean it. Keep up the great work! Kind regards - Robert Gaal" That's it for this week's edition of Stump the Crew. As you know, we recently launched our new, free developer PDF magazine, Plug In. We've spent a lot of time making sure the magazine is replete with information and that the information is correct. But, let's face it--there's no such thing as perfect. That's why this month we're giving away two copies of "MySQL: The Complete Reference," by Vikram Vaswani (McGraw-Hill/Osborne, ISBN 0-07-222477-0, 2004). The way the contest works is simple: read through this month's issue of Plug In. If you find any mistakes or typos, send an email to norbert@developershed.com with the page, column, paragraph, and line you found the mistake in. Please include the actual line from the magazine, quoted in the message, as well as the fix. Only one entry per person. At the end of the month, we'll choose two names at random from those who entered. Simple? Good! Contest runs until March 31, 2004, so get started today! When I heard that on the radio, I thought, “Man how old am I?” After asking my wife and looking at my driver’s license, I realized that--I’m younger than Captain Kirk. It’s hard to imagine my childhood without him, though. My earliest dream was to be an astronaut. This led to a lifelong love of science and the tools of the scientist. I still remember getting my first microscope at age 12. As I grew, those childhood dreams faded and I chased after other dreams – music, religion, education. But there was always a connection with that overacting Canadian, William Shatner. Maybe that connection meant so much to me because I was lucky to get a disapproving grunt out of my own father. But there was Captain Kirk, chasing green girlie aliens, leading a Vulcan and a reluctant MD across the galaxy, really for no other reason than “to boldly go where no one has gone before!” Man that’s for me! I want to explore strange new worlds--and I am! Going back to school now for a master’s degree, waiting for the arrival of my first baby boy (in less than two months)--these are brave new worlds. William Shatner: born March 22, 1931--73 years old this week. P.S. Be sure to keep an eye out for our exclusive interview with Wil Wheaton in April’s edition of Plug In!
